What Makes a Boat a 'Trawler'?: Take a Seminar on the Unique Features of Trawlers
With Selene’s Dylan Hildebrand and Wayne Goldman away at the Selene shipyard, Selene Yacht advisors and experienced cruisers Corrin & Joe Crowley stepped in at 2026 Trawlerfest Baltimore to present a seminar on ‘The Unique Features of Trawlers.’

With a new Selene 60 Classic Explorer currently in-build, and with thousands of miles of cruising experience (not to mention four years of living aboard their previous Selene), Joe and Corrin were the perfect people to walk through what makes a trawler unique and what to look for when buying or building a new trawler.
In the roughly one-hour video below, the couple provides a detailed walkthrough of the unique characteristics that make trawlers the go-to vessels for long-range cruising and liveaboard lifestyles.
In addition to explaining the difference between full-displacement and semi-displacement hulls, Joe & Corrin demonstrate how a trawler's extended fuel and water capacity supports longer voyages without frequent refueling stops. In addition, they detail how a full-displacement hull provides comfortable living space and more storage for extended cruising.
Corrin & Joe then delve into the reliability of single engine setups commonly found in trawlers, explaining how they offer fuel efficiency, ease of maintenance, and safety at sea (especially when paired with backup power solutions like wing engines or hydraulic drives with larger generators). Likewise, they discuss the sturdy construction of trawlers, which makes them well-suited for handling rough sea conditions, ensuring safety and stability on the water.
Before fielding several questions from the audience, the presentation goes into pilothouse and flybridge designs, which offer enhanced visibility and functionality, making trawlers adaptable for both Bluewater cruising and coastal exploration.
